HBHS Supreme Winners of Waikato Sports Awards
HBHS won four of the six categories during last night’s 2010 Waikato Secondary Schools Sports Awards. Alex Carr (Sports Captain and Captain of the 1st XI Soccer Team) won the Student Leader of the Year. The HBHS 1st XV Rugby team won Team of the Year, after winning the Sanix Secondary Schools World Championships, winning the Super Eight Rugby and coming second in the National competition. Mr Nigel Hotham won coach of the year for his work with the 1st XV rugby team and touch team, While Nick Ross won Sportsman of the Year and the Supreme Award for overall sporting achievement.
Ross was part of the Maadi Cup-winning Rowing team this year. He has captained the 1st XV Rugby team through the Sanix World Championships and Super Eight wins, and the second place in the National finals. He was recently selected to represent New Zealand in rugby, and was vice-captain of the New Zealand secondary schools team that beat Australia in Dunedin last month. Ross successfully competed in three rowing and rugby seasons in a row, back-to-back, which is an extraordinary athletic feat in itself. We congratulate him, Alex Carr, the 1st XV and Mr Hotham upon their successes.
It was a very proud night for HBHS, and reflects the effort, talent and expertise of hundreds of players, coaches and supporters. This was a wonderful way to end the year.
