HBHS Sailing
The Burgess Trophy is a sailing regatta between schools in the Waikato and Thames region. In the last five years we have won the cup three times. 37 boats raced in the 2011 competition.
With little wind, it was difficult for any of us to pick up pace. After the first slow race, Cambridge High School established a strong lead of 14 points. We tried to fight back in the following races, but Cambridge continued to score high across all of the classes. In the Laser Class, I gained first place, and Adam Cameron and Sam Martin got a closely fought fourth and fifth. Gregory Kampjes gained third in the Open Class.
In the end, Cambridge High pulled away from us (and the rest of the teams) with a commendable 118 points. We beat Hillcrest High, securing second place with 93 points, and had to hand over the trophy to a deserving Cambridge team.
As the Sailing Captain, I would like to thank all students that participated in this event; Hamish Carter, Juan Robertson, Sam Martin, and Adam Cameron. Also, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Gregory Kampjes, Oliver Doube, David Tang and Justin Wimmer, who completed all of the races in boats that they were unfamiliar with.
I encourage all sailors who didn’t participate to get involved, to help us reclaim the Cup next year.
Thank you,
Duncan Barnard
