HBHS Mooting Team win University of Waikato Competition

It has been a very long time since we have had our hands on this trophy, but thanks to a trio of Year 12 budding legal experts, HBHS are now the University of Waikato Mooting Competition champions.  The team won the title on Friday, beating 69 other school teams from the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki regions.  Mooting is ideal preparation for a potential career in law, as the teams have to work through legal documents and construct an argument which has to be presented in front of judges in order to try and win a case.  Decisions are made on the strength and validity of the argument in relation to real-life law which means the students have to work their way through pages (and we mean pages!) of legal documents in order to build a robust case.  The trio of Jacob Cheatley, Matthew Handford and Samuel Turnbull have each won a $3000 Scholarship to study law at the University of Waikato, a $400 cash prize, and the opportunity to spend two days work experience at the legal firm McCaw Lewis.  Congratulations to the boys on this wonderful win, and thanks and congratulations to the teachers who have supported them, Mrs Denise Weren and Mrs Jo Wallace.
