HBHS beat St John's College 32 - 29

It was a local derby in the best sense of the words, with St John's College and HBHS supporters crowded around the Number 1 field yesterday on a stunning winter's afternoon, and the match absolutely lived up to expectations.  The St John's side was big, strong and very well-drilled, and right from the start of the match proved just how much of a threat they posed.  Even the most ardent of HBHS supporters would have felt that at 17 - 3 down, HBHS were done for the season, and there was certainly work still to be done at half time with St John's leading 24 - 15.  In the second half, HBHS would score, only for St John's to edge further into the lead, and it would take a Kieran Lee try off the back of a strong HBHS breakaway in the final five minutes of the match to give HBHS the lead for the first time.  The game was by no means done, and St John's were immediately on the attack, having to turn down a penalty that would have given them the draw as that would not have been enough for them as challengers.  Finally, after holding out the St John's pack, HBHS got the turnover and the whistle went with a very relieved HBHS side getting the win 32 - 29.  They will now face New Plymouth Boys' High School on Saturday at 12pm on the Number 1 field.  Congratulations to the team on such a hard-fought win, and to our no doubt very relieved coaching staff of Mr Greg Kirkham and Mr Nigel Hotham, and Manager Mrs Barbara Clark.
