HBHS 1st XV in Top 4 of Chief's Knockout Cup

HBHS' 1xt XV game versus Wesley College on Saturday was described by Coach Greg Kirkham as 'a very torrid affair.'  He exlained:

We spent a lot of time defending what was probably the biggest team we've played this season.  Size-wise the competition was very much David versus Goliath.  It was one of those games that went right down to the wire, with only five points difference in the end result of 14 - 9.  An individual try by Ben Finau gave us the crucial difference, otherwise it was just penalty kicks backwards and forwards.

This result means we've won the Chiefs region and we've secured the right to play in the Top Four.  On Friday we will travel down to Rotorua, in preparation for our game on Saturday against Auckland champions, St Kentigern's College.  The winner of that game will host the final, against the winner of the other final.

It was pleasing to get that result; it was certainly a hard-won game as Wesley played very well.  Their coaching staff were very gracious after the game.  Their coach's son actually attends HBHS, so it's a small world.  It was one of those games where we were without the ball and the territory periodically, but we still managed a win.

We had a number of teachers, students and parents who came up to support us in Auckland.  We were very thankful for that support, because going to Wesley, you are always going to be facing Wesley's singing - which they do very, very well.  It is always a great occassion, to play at Wesley.

HBHS invite supporters to join us at Rotorua Boys' High School on Saturday at 12 o'clock.
