HBHS 1st & 2nd XI Contest Waikato Football Final
On Saturday the 5th of May, Hamilton Boys' High School entered both the 1st XI and 2nd XI in the annual Referees Cup Preseason Tournament held at St Peter's School, Cambridge. The tournament involves the 1st XIs from 8 different schools throughout the Waikato Region, which ensures some important competition for the teams prior to the season. Both Hamilton Boys' High School teams performed admirably during pool play, topping their pools.
A notable mention goes to the young HBHS 2nd XI, as they managed a 1-0 win over St Peter's in the opening match, and followed this up with victories against St Paul's and Cambridge High School.
With both HBHS teams topping their pools, the final was a 1st XI v 2nd XI affair for the second time in two years. An even first half meant the teams went into half time at 1-0, thanks to 1st XI striker Daniel Maronga scoring late in the first half. A strong second half performance from the 1st XI meant the game finished 4-0 with two goals coming from Captain Logan Wisnewski and Max Ericksen contributing one of his own.
Our school's success at the tournament forms an excellent start to a promising season ahead for HBHS football.
