HBHS, Canteen and the Great Head Shave

HBHS student James Wotton and 24 of his school mates had their heads shaved to raise funds for Canteen, in front of a crowd of 300 well wishers and supporters on Thursday lunchtime. Many thanks are due to The Edge, who MC’ed the event, and a squad of hairdressers worked for half an hour to give the boys ‘number ones’. A number of the boys looked serene on the stage as they went from being bushy to bald. We are particularly grateful to Courtney Bell from Morph Hair, William and Judith from 5X Barber Shop and the Rodney Wayne girls for helping our boys during this radical transformation.

While the boys were being shaved, Chris Stacey (an old boy of the school) spoke about his experiences as a teen with cancer, and Aukia (from Canteen) explained to us the ways in which our donations would be used to support teens like Chris, as they battle to get well.

James Wotton, who has just finished performing one of the lead roles in ‘Sweeney Todd’, decided he was ‘looking a bit shaggy’ a week ago. After giving it some thought, he saw a great opportunity to raise funds for Canteen, and to improve awareness about cancer. Within a week he organized the sponsorship, venue, hairdressers and MC, as well as the other boys who chose to participate in the event. This effort generated an impressive $1110.00 for Canteen, and encouraged all of those attended to reflect on the needs of cancer sufferers everywhere. We would like to thank all those who participated, attended and gave generously at this event.
