Gillette Cup Update

Gillette Cup - Day One

HBHS versus John McGlashan College (JMC) from Otago

Morning rain delayed the start of the game, which was then reduced to a 40 over match. JMC won the toss and invited HBHS to bat. The openers Cameron Barker (18) and Jared Sun (21) put on a good opening partnership of 51 runs. Nikhil Vishwanath (58) and Ryan Thomson (31) kept things moving at a steady rate until Ryan was out. Then Jonty Keaney (42) came in, and Nikhil and Jonty increased the scoring rate until they both got out in the final over after putting together a 95 run partnership. Tyler Johansson played a cameo role by hitting a 6 off the last ball, which was the only ball he faced. A final score of 204-7 was thought to be a challenging target.

JMC started at a good rate but lost one of their openers in the 4th over to good bowling from Toa Davis (1-16 off 6 overs). Toa and Tyler Johansson kept the pressure on for the first 8 overs only conceding 29 runs between them. Then the HBHS spinners were introduced and apart from S. Pringle (28) and B. Schmidt (26), wickets tumbled and no other batters got into double figures. Joe Walker (3-18 off 8 overs), Nikhil Vishwanath (3-12 off 4.5 overs) and Mitchell Dickeson (1-19 off 8 overs) did the damage bowling, and Cameron Barker took 3 stumpings. JMC ended up all out on 100, a 104 run win to HBHS.

Tomorrow we play Christchurch Boys High, who are the current champions, and on Thursday we play Kings College.
