Further Scholarship Successes
Daniel Bates (Yr 13) has just received a full fees Rowing Sports Scholarship at Lincoln University. The scholarship covers tuition fees for courses at Lincoln University and, in line with the other sports scholarships at New Zealand’s specialist land-based university, there will be access to programmes for strength and conditioning, nutrition, sport psychology and mentoring. The other scholarships cover cricket, golf, hockey, netball, rugby and soccer.
Four of the ten 2010 Waikato University Computer Science Scholarships (first year fees paid, plus accelerated programme) have been awarded to Hamilton Boys’ High School students this year. The recipients are Timothy Leathart (Yr 13), Caine Jameson (Yr 13), Samuel Shute (Yr 13), Henry Robbins (Year 12).
The Scholarships are awarded on the basis of examination results of each applicant in the Waikato University Computer Science Scholarship Examinations, held each year in high schools. The examination is made up of two parts: a two-hour written examination and a six-hour practical examination and is roughly the equivalent to the practical programming tasks and final exam of the first year paper Introduction to Computer Science 1 at the University of Waikato, which gives students a basic level of competence in computer programming and computing concepts.
The University notes that students who show sufficient proficiency in computing may merit placement in the more senior papers, while those who demonstrate a particular aptitude for the subject will be offered a Computer Science Undergraduate Scholarship on the basis of the exam results. Our hearty congratulations go to the four young men who have met this criteria.
