Band Camp!
The HBHS Jazz Band and Gypsy Pickers made their annual pilgrimage to Okete, on Raglan Harbour, over the weekend. A weekend retreat allowed the new group twelve hours of playing time together, guided by Mr Botting, Mr Skandera, Mr Peters, Mr Sutherland and Mr Booth. Band Camp is a part of the preparation for a local tour, planned to coincide with the Super 8 Cultural Festival in May.
The Jazz Band and Gypsy Pickers have welcomed one new Year 10 student and six Year 9s this year. The boys had to register their interest, and were then taken on the camp and put through their paces, before having their places confirmed in either of the two bands.
In a new intiative, all of the musicians who attended camp are working together on a piece called ‘Evil Ways’. The sound of the Gypsy Pickers and the Jazz Band combined promises to be deeper and more complex that either group alone. It is being anticipated with interest by the Boys’ High community.
