Aspiring Student Wins Billboard Design.

Daniel Krippner (Yr 12) recently won the Hamilton High Schools’ Centennial Billboard design competition where he presented a very professional, architecturally designed billboard.

His design is soon to be displayed throughout Hamilton City and the region promoting the Hamilton High Schools’ combined Centennial, set for 17th-20th of March 2011.

The past few weeks have enabled Daniel to become more hands on with his project; evenings after school and holidays have provided Daniel the opportunity to work with Murray Borland of Borland Architecture, whose help has been tremendous in the support for the Billboard and also as a Centennial Committee Member. Daniel went on to comment about his time spent with Murray at his studio.

“It’s been great working with Murray, It’s a good reality check, because now I know what it’s like working in the industry, it’s so different to the schooling environment. I now know what it is really like working out of school. The prospect of working for Murray has also arisen, which has provided me with a great opportunity for hands on experience.”

The initial project that Daniel presented to the Committee took him around 6 hours, in which three sketches were done, of which the original sketch is nearly identical to the winning design Krippner said. Although since working on it, Daniel has produced a number of other designs for merchandise which will be available for sale on the centennial website.

“I have designed various ties, a spoon, pen, umbrella, cufflinks and label pin, carry bag and a key ring, among many other designs.”

Daniel is currently in Year 12 at Hamilton Boys’ High School and he dedicates most of his school time to the subject of graphics.  His future aspirations lay in Engineering or Media design through the Sir Edmond Hillary Scholarship on offer at Waikato University.  “Since I heard about the Scholarship, I have wanted to go to Waikato University.”

The billboard competition was open to all students from both Hamilton Girls’ and Hamilton Boys’ High Schools.  Second place was won by Josi Witehira from Hamilton Girls’ with Malhar Soni from Hamilton Boys’ taking third place.
