Andrew Wilson wins NZSS Clay Target Shooting title

The HBHS Clay Target Shooting team attended the NZSS Championships in Christchurch during the holidays.  The event consisted of the South Island Championships and Nationals combined to provide shooters opportunities during both days to place.

There were 325 competitors competing over the event and over 50 teams also competing for team events.  The HBHS team missed out by only a few points on medals on day one, whilst Andrew Wilson made three shoot-off finals.  Andrew finished in first place in the Point Score event shoot-off against 4 other competitors and was awarded the Single Barrel Champion title on day one after beating 19 other competitors, before shooting off for the South Island High Gun against 3 others where he finished second.

On the second day of shooting conditions were more difficult with fog making targets hard to see.  The team shot well during the second day but were well out of the running for placings.  Andrew, however, maintained his day one score consistency, managing to win the 2-day event by one point over Ryan Crapp from Katikati College.  This meant that Andrew became the National Clay Target Down the Line Champion for 2018.   This is the first time an HBHS student has won this National title and with the trophy, Andrew was presented with a new Beretta 686 trap gun from Martyn Coe, the Director and main sponsor of the event.

Andrew and Jed Pirrit were also selected to shoot for the Fish and Game Regional event on the third day which is also a highlight as it means HBHS had two students in the top five for the region.
